A wash cleans the surface. A detail corrects and protects it — decontaminating the paint with a clay bar, polishing out swirls and light scratches, and applying a sealant or coating, plus a full interior clean including shampooing and conditioning. A detail takes hours rather than minutes and lasts months rather than until the next rain.

Almost always washing technique — automatic car washes with brushes, and dirty sponges or towels dragging grit across the paint. They are fine scratches in the clear coat, visible in direct sunlight. Machine polishing removes them by levelling the clear coat slightly, which is why paint can only be corrected a limited number of times over its life.

For a vehicle you intend to keep and wash properly, generally yes — it makes cleaning easier, resists chemical etching from bird droppings and tree sap, and lasts years rather than months. It is not scratch-proof and it does not remove the need to wash. Applied over uncorrected paint it locks the existing swirls in, so correction comes first or not at all.

An exterior and interior maintenance detail is usually two to four hours; full paint correction with a coating can be a full day or more. Mobile service needs access to the vehicle and space to work around it, and most operators carry their own water and power. Booking a full correction means the car is unavailable for the day.

Smoke and pet odour are the hard cases, because they permeate the headliner and the ventilation system rather than sitting in the seats — those need ozone or enzyme treatment and are not guaranteed. Old set stains on light upholstery often lighten rather than disappear.
